Johnny Lee Clary was invited to be the guest speaker for the U.S. Army at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri for the Martin Luther King Observance Day, Jan. 15th, 2008. As the Guidon which is a base newspaper reported, history was made because it was the first time in history that a former leader of the Ku Klux Klan was invited to give a speech to honor Dr. Martin Luther King on a U.S. Military base. There were a few people who were concerned and contacted installation senior assistant equal opportunity advisor and organizer of the event, Master Sgt. Patrick Thompson voicing their concerns but according to Thompson, once Clary spoke there were no worries whatsoever. As a matter of fact Clary has been invited back to speak at future diversity events to promote equality and racial unity. Thompson told Rev. Clary that it was the first time they had a speaker that held the attention of all those in attendance. Thompson stated, “Mr. Clary brought a very positive and powerful message of hope, honesty and integrity to our program. His appearance was the first of its kind, and I certainly hope isn't the last. I truly feel Mr. Clary is an ally in the field of Equal Opportunity. His appearance solidified and drove home to all who attended, that we all have an obligation as change agents. Those of us in the Human relations field know, and clearly understand the importance of being committed to respect of all people around the world.”
Clary received an award certificate from the U.S. Army as well as an engraved plaque declaring him as “A Change Agent.”
‘I came to honor Dr. Martin Luther King and all of his accomplishments for racial unity in the nation. I also came to honor the United States Armed Service members; however they ended up honoring me. It touched my heart more than ever. It was one of the most special moments of my life. I urge all Americans to support our Armed Services members 100%” Clary stated.
The Army honored Clary with a tour of Ft. Leonard Wood after the event, which was conducted by Master Sgt. Thompson, and Master Sgt. Greg Jenkins.
The event also featured former Harlem Globetrotter Michael Douglas.
